Valentine’s Day Special – Top 10 Literary Couples I Admire (or T10T – 12th Feb 2019)

Hi everyone, Happy Valentine’s! Today’s post is kind of inspired by the Top 10 Tuesday (a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl) prompt for this week which I skipped because I couldn’t think of 10 of my favorite couples in books and then felt like an idiot because I read so much romance and I should have thought a little harder. Oh, well.

Now, these aren’t my absolute favorite couples (because I probably don’t have 10 of those) BUT in honor of Valentine’s Day, I have compiled a list of literary couples that I really admire and believe are perfect together, in no particular order.

Note: There might be mild spoilers as I wanted to share my thoughts on why I think these characters are so good together though I’ve tried not to give away the plot. I’ve also tried to include as many different authors as I could because otherwise it would be filled with Linda Howard and Nora Roberts/JD Robb’s book couples as I’ve read a ton of romances from them.

So, let’s begin!

Claire & Jamie from the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon

I’m currently in the middle of the 3rd book in this series (Voyager) and I’m just amazed at how strong and brave both these characters are, and everything they’ve been through for each other and together. These are strong, resourceful characters and I can’t get enough of Jamie and Claire, and I love the books as well as the show!

Aelin & Rowan from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas

There is so much I could say for these two, but all I’ll say is that they found each other in the darkness and fought their way out of it together. I just love Aelin and Rowan together, they match each other strength for strength and I’m glad they found each other despite the obstacles.

Eve & Roarke from the In Death series by JD Robb a.k.a. Nora Roberts

I’ve only read 8 out of some 50+ (give or take) books in this police procedural romantic suspense series so far (was supposed to read the 9th one last month but didn’t get to it) and apart from the cases solved in each book, what I enjoy the most is seeing Eve & Roarke together, discovering and learning more about each other and yet knowing each other so well.

Eve & Roarke are usually my go-to couple whenever I’m asked for my OTP because they are just perfect – they are opposites in certain ways and yet similar in a lot of ways too. They are both independent, tough, smart, caring and haven’t had easy lives. But the way they are together, I just adore them!

Magnus & Alec from The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare

Truth be told, I might be reading the Shadowhunter books just for Malec who are absolutely adorable and that’s mostly why I love the show too! I just want to see them get married and be happy together, in the books and on the show as well before it ends!

I haven’t yet read City of Heavenly Fire (or Clockwork Princess in the Infernal Devices trilogy) but I will soon and I am SO freakin’ excited for The Red Scrolls of Magic – give me more Magnus & Alec, stat!

Blair & Wyatt from the Blair Mallory duology by Linda Howard

I read these books about a decade ago and I must have read them at least half a dozen times since. These are my go-to books when I’m in a slump or feel like reading something quick and fun.

There’s just something about Blair and Wyatt’s chemistry and how Wyatt handles Blair at her best and worst – I just love to see them together! Never a dull moment in this couple’s life. This is definitely a case of opposites attract, and boy, they sure do.

Simon & Blue from Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Simon and Blue are just so freakin’ adorable!! I love how they got to know each other without being distracted by looks or race or religion or just anything that you can see rather than feel. It is just so heart-warming to see how they inspire each other to be brave and just be who they are.

This is one instance where I honestly don’t know which is better, book or movie – I’ve read the book twice and watched the movie multiple times and I cry every time and I love it!

Juliette & Warner from the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi

I really, really didn’t like Warner for a very long time but then my opinion changed. When I finally saw his side of the story, I understood how good he is for her, how good Juliette is for him. They both have so much to give and teach each other – they empower each other to own who they are and not fear what they perceive as weaknesses.

I haven’t read Restore Me yet but it’s on my TBR – I just want to reread Ignite Me first because I loved it so much!

Sam & Jaine from Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard

This is one of the best romantic suspense novels I’ve read (more than a dozen times!), one of my absolute favorites from LH and not just because of the plot but because of Sam and Jaine.

These are two amazing characters who initially butt heads a lot, then get to know each other and can’t deny that they’re attracted. But also, it’s wonderful to see them connect on so many levels; their banter is hilarious…and I’m feeling a strong urge to reread this book right now.

Abigail & Brooks from The Witness by Nora Roberts

It’s been a couple of years since I read this one but I remember feeling happy seeing how Brooks persisted and put in the efforts to get the woman he wanted, Abigail, who had closed herself off from friendships and connections years ago and just kept to herself. And he got her to open up and let him in. Incredible.

The way the understanding and trust between them developed and how they gave each other and love a chance, was great to read about.

Feyre & Rhysand from the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J Maas

It makes me really happy to see people in a relationship help, love and support each other no matter what and that’s what I love about Feysand. Both of them had been through a lot before they met but their bond is so pure and powerful and their trust and faith in each other so strong. Rhysand treated Feyre as his equal, always supporting her and being there even when she doesn’t want any help. But she’d do the same for him. That’s just beautiful.

I guess I’ll stop here for now. I thought I might do more than 10 but this post is long enough as it is. Maybe I’ll do a part 2 of this post. We’ll see.

What did you think of this post? Have you read any of these books or would you like to get to know any of these couples? And how are you celebrating Valentine’s Day? Let me know in the comments below!

    • Based on just the first book, I’d say that’s fair. I was Team Adam until I read the second book and the two novellas. Warner does redeem himself and I saw his side of the story. Ignite me was amazing. 🙂 Maybe give it a chance? Try Destroy Me, the short novella set between the first two books. It’s from Warner’s perspective. 🙂

  1. Malec <3. To be honest, I think I'm only tempted to read the rest of TMI JUST for Malec, haha.

YOU'VE GOT TO READ CLOCKWORK PRINCESS SOON. I adore Tessa, Will and Jem and I wish there were more moments with them at the time (at least until the spin-off series between TID and TMI).
