Valentine’s Day Special – Top 10 Literary Couples I Admire (or T10T – 12th Feb 2019)

Hi everyone, Happy Valentine’s! Today’s post is kind of inspired by the Top 10 Tuesday (a weekly meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl) prompt for this week which I skipped because I couldn’t think of 10 of my favorite couples in books and then felt like an idiot because I read so much romance and I should have thought a little harder. Oh, well.

Now, these aren’t my absolute favorite couples (because I probably don’t have 10 of those) BUT in honor of Valentine’s Day, I have compiled a list of literary couples that I really admire and believe are perfect together, in no particular order.

Note: There might be mild spoilers as I wanted to share my thoughts on why I think these characters are so good together though I’ve tried not to give away the plot. I’ve also tried to include as many different authors as I could because otherwise it would be filled with Linda Howard and Nora Roberts/JD Robb’s book couples as I’ve read a ton of romances from them.

So, let’s begin!

Claire & Jamie from the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon

I’m currently in the middle of the 3rd book in this series (Voyager) and I’m just amazed at how strong and brave both these characters are, and everything they’ve been through for each other and together. These are strong, resourceful characters and I can’t get enough of Jamie and Claire, and I love the books as well as the show!

Aelin & Rowan from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas

There is so much I could say for these two, but all I’ll say is that they found each other in the darkness and fought their way out of it together. I just love Aelin and Rowan together, they match each other strength for strength and I’m glad they found each other despite the obstacles.

Eve & Roarke from the In Death series by JD Robb a.k.a. Nora Roberts

I’ve only read 8 out of some 50+ (give or take) books in this police procedural romantic suspense series so far (was supposed to read the 9th one last month but didn’t get to it) and apart from the cases solved in each book, what I enjoy the most is seeing Eve & Roarke together, discovering and learning more about each other and yet knowing each other so well.

Eve & Roarke are usually my go-to couple whenever I’m asked for my OTP because they are just perfect – they are opposites in certain ways and yet similar in a lot of ways too. They are both independent, tough, smart, caring and haven’t had easy lives. But the way they are together, I just adore them!

Magnus & Alec from The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare

Truth be told, I might be reading the Shadowhunter books just for Malec who are absolutely adorable and that’s mostly why I love the show too! I just want to see them get married and be happy together, in the books and on the show as well before it ends!

I haven’t yet read City of Heavenly Fire (or Clockwork Princess in the Infernal Devices trilogy) but I will soon and I am SO freakin’ excited for The Red Scrolls of Magic – give me more Magnus & Alec, stat!

Blair & Wyatt from the Blair Mallory duology by Linda Howard

I read these books about a decade ago and I must have read them at least half a dozen times since. These are my go-to books when I’m in a slump or feel like reading something quick and fun.

There’s just something about Blair and Wyatt’s chemistry and how Wyatt handles Blair at her best and worst – I just love to see them together! Never a dull moment in this couple’s life. This is definitely a case of opposites attract, and boy, they sure do.

Simon & Blue from Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Simon and Blue are just so freakin’ adorable!! I love how they got to know each other without being distracted by looks or race or religion or just anything that you can see rather than feel. It is just so heart-warming to see how they inspire each other to be brave and just be who they are.

This is one instance where I honestly don’t know which is better, book or movie – I’ve read the book twice and watched the movie multiple times and I cry every time and I love it!

Juliette & Warner from the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi

I really, really didn’t like Warner for a very long time but then my opinion changed. When I finally saw his side of the story, I understood how good he is for her, how good Juliette is for him. They both have so much to give and teach each other – they empower each other to own who they are and not fear what they perceive as weaknesses.

I haven’t read Restore Me yet but it’s on my TBR – I just want to reread Ignite Me first because I loved it so much!

Sam & Jaine from Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard

This is one of the best romantic suspense novels I’ve read (more than a dozen times!), one of my absolute favorites from LH and not just because of the plot but because of Sam and Jaine.

These are two amazing characters who initially butt heads a lot, then get to know each other and can’t deny that they’re attracted. But also, it’s wonderful to see them connect on so many levels; their banter is hilarious…and I’m feeling a strong urge to reread this book right now.

Abigail & Brooks from The Witness by Nora Roberts

It’s been a couple of years since I read this one but I remember feeling happy seeing how Brooks persisted and put in the efforts to get the woman he wanted, Abigail, who had closed herself off from friendships and connections years ago and just kept to herself. And he got her to open up and let him in. Incredible.

The way the understanding and trust between them developed and how they gave each other and love a chance, was great to read about.

Feyre & Rhysand from the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J Maas

It makes me really happy to see people in a relationship help, love and support each other no matter what and that’s what I love about Feysand. Both of them had been through a lot before they met but their bond is so pure and powerful and their trust and faith in each other so strong. Rhysand treated Feyre as his equal, always supporting her and being there even when she doesn’t want any help. But she’d do the same for him. That’s just beautiful.

I guess I’ll stop here for now. I thought I might do more than 10 but this post is long enough as it is. Maybe I’ll do a part 2 of this post. We’ll see.

What did you think of this post? Have you read any of these books or would you like to get to know any of these couples? And how are you celebrating Valentine’s Day? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Rowaelin yes! I might not love TOG anymore but they are so great together. I don’t get why someone would rather ship her with Dorian or Chaol. Feysand is amazing too.

I wish I could get my hands on The Red Scrolls of Magic already to feed my Malec heart. I read Restore Me in only seven hours so I can’t wait until the next book is released.

I have read handful of Nora Roberts books but I think most of them are a miss for me. She’s my mom’s favorite author but I don’t usually like her plotlines.

    • Yes, more Malec!! 😍☺️
And that’s why I’m waiting to read Restore Me..I hate waiting for sequels so it’s good that I haven’t started this trilogy yet. 😋

Oh no, I’m sorry to hear that. Have you tried any of Nora’s Fantasy/Paranormal/Dystopian novels? Or the detective series set in the future? She dabbles in such a wide range of genres and has published over 220 books that I truly believe there must be something for everyone..🙈

Let me know the ones you really didn’t like, that might help me figure out which ones you might want to try. 🙂

  2. The only of these which appeal to me are the Outlander series, a more epic couple would be hard pressed to find. Someday, I’m sure I’ll get to the Sarah Maas Court books, but I’ve wondered if they live up to the hype.
*also never realized this J.D. RoBb series had a romance involved-now I’ll be better equipped to recommend/not recommend to library patrons👍
As far as the post, I like that you went your own way…I’m having inner debate about doing the same thing next week, as less than 2000 GR ratings doesn’t really apply to me. Hmmm maybe I’ll do a hybrid.

    • Thanks! I hadn’t even looked at next week’s prompt! 🙈 I don’t think I’ll have 10 for that either – I usually read a lot of popular/hyped books – but there might be some from before I discovered BookTube and Bookstagram.. 🙂

Yes, the In Death series by JD Robb is an adult Romantic Suspense Police procedural Sci-Fi set in New York in 2058 AD and I love that it focuses on the characters, the relationships and friendships and has toe-curling, steamy romance as well as engaging suspense and action. 😍 Hope this helps! 🙂 Also, the books can be read as stand-alones but I prefer to read them in order. 🙂

SJM’s books definitely lived up to the hype for me! I love both the series, Throne of Glass maybe a little more than the ACOTAR series. 🙈 Hope you do pick them up and enjoy them!

  3. So many great ships. Now, you may wanna take a seat before you start reading my opinions.
I agree with Rowan and Aelin, I mean, their love is so pure and true.
Moving on, we have Malec! Now, those two are my OTPs. I will fight until the end of the world just so that I can see those two together. They go through so much but they persevere through it all and stay together!
Also, yeah, Feysand is one of the best ships out there. Rhysand was agreeable to give up his mate and let her marry Tamlin as she was happy – I love that about him. I love how loyal and protective he is, and, I can’t imagine what sort of pain he must have gone through with amaranth Under the Mountain and then, seeing his mate with someone else and even when they broke up, her calling him ‘just a fun distraction’. He is the best guy ever – I want someone like him.
Moreover, I’d like to add Elide and Lorcan, like, omg, I love them and want a book revolving around just them! It would be so much fun to read that. They are so cute and just so different, yet they somehow just fit together.
    Great post! xx

  4. *scrolls past the shatter me one cause she plans on reading that series eeep*

Ok so I adore Feyre and Rhys together and I totally agree with what you said, how they treated each other as an equal. That was something I really admired about them *pokes Tamlin in the eye for many things she’s still annoyed about*

Alein and Rowan wow…I mean I don’t hate them together but personally, I’ve always been a fan of her with Dorian haha but I do love Dorian myself. However I totally think Alein and Rowan bring out the best in each other, they match each other in so many ways and they pulled each other out of darkness.

    • Read the Shatter Me series soon! More books are coming out..😍
      Hahaha, yes poke Tamlin! 😬😜
I liked how she got along with Dorian but only because of their mutual love for books…and how he was so nice to her. But I always saw them as great friends.🙈
Rowan and Aelin just have that something extra that they couldn’t have with anyone else. 😍
