Bookish Academy Awards 2019 Tag

Do you watch Award shows? I sometimes catch a performance here and there but it’s not a must-watch TV show for me. However, *bookish* academy awards? I am SO here for it!

Sahi @ My World Of Books tagged me to do this really fun tag weeks ago (thanks, Sahi!) where I’ll be sharing my top picks from 2018 (i.e. all of the books/authors I read in 2018 regardless of when they were released) in several categories. Best Actor: Best Male Protagonist

Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser in the Outlander TV Show based on the Outlander book series.

Jamie Fraser from the Outlander series is one heck of a male protagonist – he’s strong, smart, brave, open-minded, honorable, charming and so loving – everything he says and does is just swoon-worthy. He’s also supportive, understanding, stubborn and open to change and correcting his mistakes despite everything he’s been through and faced.

Best Actress: Best Female Protagonist

Aelin Ashryver Galathynius from the Throne of Glass series is one of my all-time favorite female protagonists ever! Like Jamie Fraser, she is also amazingly strong, courageous, stubborn, cares deeply, fights even when she’s at the end of her rope and never gives up no matter how much she’s lost.

Best Cinematography: Best Plot Twist

This Mortal Coil was absolutely mind-blowing and unputdownable! The twists and turns were SO not what I guessed – Emily Suvada kept me on my toes the whole way through.

Best Costume Design: Best Book Cover

Best Supporting Actor and Actress: Best Male and Female Sidekicks/Supporting Characters

For the male sidekicks, I can’t choose between Cassian and Azriel from the ACOTAR Trilogy – they both have their strengths and qualities that make them excellent sidekicks/supporting characters to Rhysand!

Honorable mentions include Aedion, Chaol, Dorian, Lorcan, Gavriel and Fenrys from the Throne of Glass series.

As for the best female supporting character, I’m going with Officer Delia Peabody who is Lieutenant Eve Dallas’s awesome aide and friend in the In Death series by JD Robb. Together, they kick ass and bring justice to homicide victims, fight for the dead and the living – and I really wish someone would adapt this series for TV already.

Honorable mentions include the ladies of the Throne of Glass series (Lysandra, Manon, Asterin, Nesryn, Yrene, Elide) as well as the ACOTAR series (Amren, Mor, Nesta). 😉

Best On-Screen Kiss: Best Couple/Romance

Claire & Jamie from the Outlander series.
Feyre & Rhysand from the ACOTAR trilogy.
Eve & Roarke from the In Death series.

I’m not going to choose one, I simply can’t. Each of these couples has been through so much to be together, they deserve all the love and happiness in the world.

Best Original Screenplay: Most Unique Plot/World

Year One (Chronicles of The One #1) by JD Robb was one of the best books I read last year. It’s a dystopian/urban fantasy trilogy where a sudden outbreak of an unknown sickness decimates more than half of the world’s population within days. Of the survivors, certain people develop magical abilities while others seem to be immune and see the gifted ones as a threat but no one is safe.

What I loved most about this darkly intense story was how the survivors come together and choose to be human in a world where every stranger could be a savage.

Best Adapted Screenplay: Best Book-to-Movie Adaptation OR A Book That Should Be Adapted into a Film

If you haven’t read these books and seen the movies yet, you absolutely must! Drop everything and get to these right now! The books are amazing and the adaptations are fantastic.

Best Animated Feature: A Book That Would Work Well in an Animated Format OR Best Graphic Novel OR Best Children’s Book

Wires And Nerve Volume 1 and Volume 2: Gone Rogue – I don’t read a lot of graphic novels but these were a lot of fun! The Lunar Chronicles is one of my favorite series and I loved that these books gave me a chance to revisit that world and see the Rampion crew again! Also, the art is lovely!

Best Director: A Writer You Discovered For The First Time

I read a lot of new-to-me authors last year but Deborah Harkness was one of my favorites! A Discovery of Witches was amazing, magical and not just another witches and vampires story.

Honorable mentions include Madeline Miller (The Song of Achilles), Angie Thomas (The Hate U Give) and Caroline Kepnes (You).

Best Short Film: Best Novella OR Short Book

Ice by Linda Howard is a really short book (213 pages) compared to my usual reads. I read it for the second time last year and actually quite enjoyed it a lot more than when I read it over half a decade ago. It takes place in one night when the two main protagonists are caught out during an ice storm, unarmed against a ruthless enemy.

I don’t read a lot of short books but this one was really good though I wish it had been maybe some 100-150 pages longer.

Best Picture: Best Standalone

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller was absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking. I didn’t have the faintest idea about what to expect (not having been too familiar with Achilles or Troy or Greek Mythology before) and it left me a sobbing mess by the end. Madeline’s writing was powerful and perfect, not a word was out of place or unnecessary.

Best Documentary: Best Historical Fiction OR Best Non-Fiction

Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked The World is a collection of stories of incredible women who changed the course of history by fighting for themselves and what they believed in, told in a graphic novel/comic strips format with lovely illustrations.

The best way to read non-fiction for someone like me who doesn’t enjoy typical non-fiction formats.

Best Original Soundtrack: Best Audiobook OR Best Book in Verse

I listened to a lot of audiobooks last year and the ones for all of the books in the above-mentioned series are incredible! The books in these series are huge and would take me so long without the help of the audiobooks.

Check out some of the longest books I’ve ever read and the longest ones still on my TBR here – definitely hoping I can get the audiobooks for these!

Best Foreign Film: Best Diverse Author OR Best Book with Diverse Representation

Angie Thomas is one of the best diverse authors I’ve read from. And I haven’t read as many diverse books I’d like, but that’s why I’m participating in the Year of the Asian Reading Challenge 2019 this year.
